Year 3

Year 3 and 4 Cross Country

The opening fixture of the Macclesfield Primary schools cross country took place this Wednesday with sixteen of our enthusiastic Year 3 and 4 pupils representing Parkroyal. Although somewhat wet under foot, the weather stayed dry as the children ran their hearts out around the perimeter of the athletics track. Everyone was fantastic and gave 100% effort.

The girls team finished 7th out of 14 schools and the boys 9th out of 14.

Individually the following children took the top 3 places for Parkroyal

Girls: Maisie Wallinger, Matilda Johnson and India Bellshaw.

Boys: Alfie Adams, Nolen Connors and Adam Mclaren.

This week, the sewing group went emoji crazy! If they have enough yellow felt left, they'll be making some emoji key rings to sell at the summer fair. You might also like the pineapple pincushions or strawberry brooches that they're planning to sew.

Out in the playground, the children skipped- on their own, in pairs or as a group. Super teamwork and perseverance.

IMG_3325.JPG

The human body researchers, this week focused on the human skeleton and its function. Do you know how many bones there are? Their challenge was to collapse the skeleton on the App and rebuild with finite precision!

IMG_3323.JPG

Orienteering this week involved planning and looking for the best places to have their treasure trail, using map reading skills.

IMG_3326.JPG

Mrs Morgan's Mathematic Artists continued with their patterned artwork, some children having nearly completed their first piece.

LKS2 Enrichment

On Wednesday morning, Years 3 & 4 embarked on their summer Enrichment challenge...........

Mrs Tuson's group began investigating systems in the human body, and challenged themselves in a human body treasure hunt.

In their first week of sewing, with Mrs Robinshaw, all the children persevered until they could thread a needle and they learnt how to do a running stitch and a back stitch.

The new gardeners, led by Mrs Shoemaker, had a great morning- clearing, digging, brushing, planting some seeds and selling rhubarb to staff, to make money for compost.

Mr Sinden's group learnt how to use 'GarageBand', to record music played on the keyboard, drum kits and even Chinese music. They also learnt how to play the drum rhythm to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, all on the IPads!

Mrs Savage went Orienteering............let's hope they all found their way back!

Hopscotch was played the traditional way with Mrs Poole, and also with new ideas from all the children.

Mrs Morgan's mathematicians discussed how they could use mathematical equipment to create amazing art!

Just a little damp......

Wednesday's inter school cross country championships brought rain, rain, mud and more rain. Those wanting to brave the conditions gave an outstanding performance in what only can be described as swamp conditions.

Only the top 3 finishers from each school scored points, but every runner who took part from Parkroyal improved on their finishing places from last week. The top 3 finishers were as follows

Y3/4 girls  -  Tilly 68  Rosalynn 69

Y3/4 boys  -  Hamish 17  Ollie 37  Freddie 46

Y5/6 girls  -  Lucy 15  Dot 23  Yasmin 52

Y5/6 boys  -  Milton 16  Calum 46  Adam 54

A HUGE well done to all the runners - we were so proud of you running in such horrible conditions and still coming through the finish line with a smile!

Mud glorious mud!

Despite the beautiful Spring sunshine, there was an abundance of mud for our intrepid cross country runners to sprint through at the Primary Schools Cross Country races at Macclesfield athletics track on Wednesday afternoon.

For many of the runners it was their first experience of racing against so many and they all did brilliantly. The year 3 and 4 pupils ran once around the cross country track plus an extra loop with the year 5 and 6 pupils completing a gruelling 2 laps.

Our highest placed runners were Milton Y6 in 13th position with Lucy Y5 and Mikaela Y5 in 21st and 22nd positions respectively. Huge well done to all the runners against some excellent and very experienced cross country runners. Mrs Morgan and Mrs Smith are super proud of you all.

Cheshire East Schools' Music Competition

Our Choir and Orchestra proudly represented Parkroyal in the annual competition held at Knutsford academy. The orchestra managed an impressive 2nd place and we are awaiting the results of the other heat to see if the Orchestra will qualify for the final at the Victoria Hall in Stoke.

Well done to both groups, you were excellent!

Macclesfield Music Festival

On Thursday 16th February, our Choir and Orchestra performed at the Macclesfield music festival. The Choir turned out in force with over 40 of our pupils taking place in a mass ensemble featuring children from several Cheshire Primary Schools. The orchestra also performed with aplomb and a special mention goes to Marek Werner who performed a cornet solo at a very high standard to the 200 plus people present.

Well done to all involved!

On the march with the Roman Empire

We've arrived at the Roman fortress of Dewa in the far north west of Britannia, on the very edge of the known world. It's been a long sea journey lasting many weeks.

10 times more fun

Year 3 have been working hard on mastering multiplication this week. As well as regular times table practice, we have been looking at the patterns involved in multiplying a number by 10 and a 100.

Take 9 x 10 for example....

IMG_1826.JPG

Or using our knowledge of 6 x 7...

IMG_1828.JPG

...to solve 60 x 70...

IMG_1830.JPG

How can you help?

Help your child to learn all times table up to 12 x 12 so that they can recall them quickly out of sequence. We are particularly focusing on 3x, 4x, 6x and 8x tables to build on last year's work on 2x, 5x and 10x tables.

Ask them to multiply any number by 10 "moving one column to the left", and by 100 "move 2 columns to the left", and the reverse for division.

Practice using written multiplication using the following method, which uses the times table knowledge that they have to solve by 'chunking'.

PE fun for Year 3

Year 3 have really enjoyed some fun in PE recently thanks to Macclesfield Academy staff. Over the last few weeks, Mr Jowett has taken a series of lessons with both classes, focusing on skills, fitness and fun. The children have participated in a range of multi skills activities designed to improve listening and cooperation skills, and further an enthusiasm for PE. Thanks to all the Academy PE team for their support.
