On Monday 4th December, year 1 visited the Gauntlet Birds of Prey Sanctuary in Knutsford. They had already started to find out facts about owls as part of their Feather, Fluff and Fur topic, but wanted to find out about other birds too.
We were excited when we arrived in spite of the gloomy weather and soon met Sally and Joe in the sanctuary.
They told us the safety rules and then let us go for a walk round to see the huge variety of birds and other animals. We split into groups and went off to explore.
Then we went indoors to hear about the birds and watch them fly. We met Yoda the Little Owl and some other fabulous flyers.
Spike liked Evelyn's wellies!
Tessa was very brave.
Then we had lunch and fun on the play area.
Then Will talked to us about vultures. We learnt that they are becoming endangered and we need to think about them more, instead of just cute, fluffy animals!
He fed them some meat and we watched them pick at the bones like we've heard about.
After that, we sat in the Flying Arena and watched some eagles and vultures swoop over our heads. It was amazing and a little bit scary!
Kitkat liked us so much he joined us on the benches!
Heading straight for us!
A bald eagle
Sally made a bird fly right between Mrs Herbert and Mrs Randles!
Then we fed the cheeky goats.
Year 1 had an amazing time at Gauntlet and learnt lots of new facts. We are now making booklets and writing thank you letters. We'd like to thank our fabulous parent helpers and the lovely Mrs Randles for coming with us . 🦅🦉
