FOMO is a very special chick indeed. He was born with splayed legs. This is when a chick hatches with legs that are not formed correctly and causes the bones in the legs and feet to distort and bend outwards or sideways. Both of FOMO's legs were affected, all he could do was spin around on his tummy. He was unable to walk, move or sit up. It was quite sad to see him struggle.
HOW? You might ask...
The top picture was taken of FOMO after just 12 hours of treatment. (He has improved again since this picture was taken.) We made a brace for his legs (see below), this brace held his legs together to strengthen the muscles and keep the legs in the correct place, in order for his legs to grow strong enough so he can hold himself up. In order for this to be successful, you have to act straight away, while his bones are still soft. We did so and it has been greatly successful!
A video of FOMO walking today. (Please do excuse him, we haven't got round to toilet training yet, we thought tackling walking was one challenge big enough for the first week of his life!)
This is after 4 days of wearing the brace and another 2 days of practising to walk without the brace. He was very wobbly to start with and kept stumbling over, however he has definitely perfected the art of walking now!
FOMO has definitely shown the meaning of resilience during his FIRST week in the world. He has worked hard and not given up once! But we all know he couldn't have done it without help of year 4!
