World Book Week in Year 2

Monday. After reading the book 'Blown Away' , we have decided to make our own kites. We spent all of Monday afternoon creating frames for our kites using dowel and wool. It is not easy for the children to wrap the wool tightly enough to bind the dowel securely. Evie is a great help in assisting the children though. By 5 to 3, everyone has a frame ready for decorating.

 Not quite ready to fly......

Tuesday. We began thinking about decorating our kites. Our theme for the week in 'Space' so we have asked the children to think of a space theme for their design...rockets...aliens...planets and stars.  We are working on images that we will cut out and stick onto our black backgrounds......the children have to measure and draw the outline to a kite fitting their frame, just so the image is the right size. Get out your rulers....

Measure the frame carefully, so the images are the right size.

Wednesday. We're loving the rhyming couplets in the book 'Blown Away'. Yesterday we worked on finding a few pairs of rhyming words linked to space. Today we've been creating some poems, some rhyming, some not. We've had some lovely ideas, and some which we couldn't read out in an assembly...!

 I think that spaceman's suit has over-inflated.

We had a lovely time sharing our favourite books with 4CP this morning. They were all magnificent...children absolutely engrossed in sharing books with others. This afternoon, we have continued with our kites. We have been designing the space-themed cover on black paper and many children opted to paint using our metallic colours. We have some small, detailed images painted.....and we have a blaze of colour with very little black left showing.

The enthusiastic use of paint and water is always evident....

Tomorrow the monkey will be going into space. This morning we planned our stories. It will take much of the morning to write them.

Friday. It's winter again...
